Phytochemical and Pharmacological Evaluation for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) of Ethanolic Extract of Hemidesmusindicus Leaves

Abstract
Natural products have served as an important source of therapeutically active agents and since 21st century about 60% of newly discovered drugs have their origin from the plants. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is divided into ulcerative colitis (UC) and crohn’s disease (CD). Due to the severe side effects caused by allopathic medications now-a-days herbal products are gaining preference due to less harmful side effects. Individualization of treatment is also proving to be very useful for better patient treatment. Herbal plants have been used in the treatment of diseases since the beginning of time because of their high therapeutic efficiency, low toxicity, and less side effects. In the total universe of patients currently suffering from various kinds of diseases, about 80% are being treated using herbal plants. These medicinal herbal plants are used either alone or in addition to other agents in order to synergize their therapeutic action. Hemidesmusindicus (HI) is also known as Indian Sarsaparilla, belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae. It is a semi-erect shrub which can be found in various regions of India and in other countries in Asia. The plant is largely used in the Indian Traditional System of Medicine. HI possesses an efficient therapeutic efficiency against several health problems such as inflammation, cancer, ulcer, and rheumatoid arthritis. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, HI has been referred as magical spiritual dream herb due to its capacity to treat several health conditions. The therapeutic effect of the plant is mainly because of the vast Phytochemical agents present in it especially in its root. Due to the medicinal importance of HI, in this study we performed extraction, phytochemical screening and pharmacological evaluation of the HI to check the potential effect in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We observed that the extrat yield of the HI was 12% w/w. The preliminary phytochemical screening of Hemidesmusindicus leaves powder ethanolic extract suggested that alkaloidal, carbohydrates, saponin glycosides, protein & amino acids, anthraquinone glycosides, tannins & phenolic compounds, flavonoidal, steroidal compounds were present. The pharmacological evaluation Keywords - Hemidesmusindicus (HI), Ayurvedic, Phytochemical Agents, Indian Traditional System of Medicine, Therapeutic Efficiency.
