Semantic Prompt - Based Search and Chatbot for Digital Inclusion
Abstract
Currently, Chatbots are significantly playing a role in advancing digital inclusion by offering fundamentals, intuitive interactive interfaces that serve users across varying literacy levels. This study investigates how combining lightweight, multilingual chatbot technology with semantic prompt-based search mechanisms can enhance digital accessibility for digitally deprived and excluded populations. A majority of users, especially those from disadvantaged groups, experience fragmentation while using rigid, keyword-based systems in digital environments. Semantic search does not bely so much on keywords to retrieve information and the new 'all-MiniLM-L6-v2' sentence transformer at HuggingFace is an example of a modern model that not only understands natural language, but generates results that fully elaborates and develops the context for the user's query. Likewise, thinking about the development of chatbots, there is a clear line of sight from rule based ELIZA and ALICE to generative AI such as OpenAI'sChatGPT and Google's Gemini (formerly Bard). The evidence has accentuated the possibility of using more emotionally intelligent, voice-controlled and contextually aware chatbots. This will remove some of the barriers to rational behaviours and improve access (potentially) for users with limited digital literacy. When developing user best practice for any environment, role or sustainable equity, ethics especially with bias, privacy of personal data and trust with AI has to be considered. Informed by interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction, ethics, and social informatics, this research provides insights for academia, policymakers, and NGOs aiming to deploy AI-based solutions that nurture trust, bridge the digital gap across digitally deprived and tech-savvy populations, and support inclusive digital involvement across diverse user populations.
