BRIDGING THE GAP: ADDRESSING RESOURCE ACCESSIBILITY CHALLENGES FOR PERSONS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES IN INDIA
Abstract
Persons with physical disabilities in India face significant challenges in accessing essential resources and services, hindering their full participation and inclusion in society. This study examines the multifaceted barriers to resource accessibility encountered by this population, with a focus on infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment, assistive technology, and social support systems. Drawing on existing literature, government reports, and disability rights advocacy efforts, the study analyzes the interplay of physical, attitudinal, and systemic obstacles that restrict access to vital services. Key issues include inaccessible infrastructure, inadequate healthcare provision, limited educational and employment opportunities, the high cost and limited availability of assistive technologies, and insufficient social support mechanisms. The research also explores the socio-cultural context of these challenges, highlighting the roles of stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion in perpetuating inaccessibility. The study proposes a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy to address these issues, emphasizing the need for accessible infrastructure development, enhanced institutional capacity, strengthened legal and regulatory frameworks, improved access to information and communication, cross-sector collaboration, empowerment of persons with disabilities, increased public awareness, robust data collection and research, integration of disability inclusion in development initiatives, and continuous monitoring and evaluation. By adopting an inclusive and collaborative approach, India can move toward a more equitable and accessible society that ensures the full participation and integration of persons with physical disabilities in all aspects of life.
