Study on Alcohol use Pattern in Medical Students

Abstract
Alcohol is most frequently, most abused in college students. Everyday alcohol uses among college going a student has been increasing in recent years. Alcohol usage is frequent in both urban and rural locations. It has now been found that alcohol use is increasing in medical students in our country, even after knowing the hazardous effect that it causes. We have conducted the study in medical college students in an effort to know the underlying causes with following objectives 1. To know the prevalence of alcohol consumption among medical students. 2. To determine the factors, preferred type of alcohol, amount spent on it each month and to provide appropriate management. Methodology: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study and sample size was calculated using the formula n=4pq/l*l with the reference of study where prevalence was 16.6 and precision taken was 7% so the minimum sample size was 113 where as we collected data from 129 students. Data was collected using pre- tested, structured questionnaire through online portal. Results: More than 54.18% study subjects were using 300-1000/-on alcohol on single sitting and about 58.05% preferred hard liquor. 34.83% subjects had AUDIT score of >9. In 69.7% subjects cause of drinking was found celebration and just for curiosity. The positive audit score and expenses more than 5000 Rs. Per month had positive association with chi square value of 3.1. Conclusion: Differentiated guidance and multi-faceted counselling and management system are required for addressing the characteristics and culture of students in each year in colleges.
